For me, personally we call Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj as our “आराध्यदैवत”. Hailing from Junnar , near the foothills of Shivneri fort , I recall my parents telling me the tales of valour and courage of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj all my childhood and even till date. Everytime I see the statue of Chatrapati Shivaji maharaj at Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at T2 in Mumbai it makes me happy and my eyes are full of pride. I always pay my respect when I pass by the statue of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

Known for his exceptional military strategies, leadership and unwavering commitment to justice,  Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is a national icon and his legacy continues to inspire millions, particularly in the state of Maharashtra. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born in 1630 in the fort of Shivneri, near Pune, to Shahaji Bhosale and Jijabai. Raised with strong values of bravery, justice and independence by his mother, Shivaji developed a deep love for his culture, religion and the welfare of his people. Even from a young age, he displayed remarkable leadership qualities and a sharp military mind.

At the age of 16, Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured the Torna Fort, marking the beginning of his military conquests. Over the next several years, he expanded his empire through a series of audacious campaigns, defeating the powerful Mughal Empire and Adil Shahi Sultanate. He was known for his guerrilla warfare tactics, which enabled him to hold his own against larger, better-equipped armies.

    Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Contributions:

  1. Establishment of the Maratha Empire: One of the  greatest achievements of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj  was the establishment of the Maratha Empire. His kingdom stretched across present-day Maharashtra, parts of Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat. He is credited with uniting various regional kingdoms under one banner, creating a sense of Maratha pride and a formidable resistance to foreign invaders.
  • Innovative Military Strategies:  Chatrapati Shivaji’s military tactics were revolutionary. He introduced guerrilla warfare, which focused on small, rapid attacks rather than large-scale battles. His innovative use of forts, rapid movements and knowledge of local geography made him a highly effective military leader. He is often regarded as a military genius who inspired future generations of warriors. Even today defense personnel  from indian friendly country’s come to India and get trained for his guerilla warfare technique.
  • Administration and Governance:  Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was not only a skilled warrior but also a visionary ruler. He established a progressive administration, emphasizing justice, fairness and welfare. He implemented a system of revenue collection, encouraged trade and ensured the protection of the rights of peasants and merchants. His kingdom was known for its tolerance of different religions and communities, with Hindus and Muslims living in harmony under his rule.
  • Forts and Naval Power: Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj built an extensive network of forts along the western ghats and the Konkan Coast, including the famous Raigad, Sindhudurg and Lohagad forts. These forts played a crucial role in safeguarding his kingdom from invasions and providing defense against the Mughals and other enemies. He also established a navy to protect the coastline and promote trade, making him one of the earliest Indian rulers to focus on naval defense.
  • Legacy of Patriotism and Nationalism: Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s life and work continue to be a source of inspiration for the people of India, especially in the fight for independence and the protection of cultural identity. His patriotism and commitment to safeguarding Indian sovereignty left a profound impact on the nation, long before the freedom struggle gained momentum in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The day is not just an occasion for remembrance, but also for reaffirming the values that  Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj stood for—honor, bravery, justice and freedom. The celebrations are marked by several grand events:

  1. Processions and Rallies: On this day, processions and rallies are organized in various cities and towns, particularly in Pune, Mumbai and Kolhapur, where people from all walks of life gather to honor the great king. The processions feature decorated horses, muskets and banners of the Maratha flag. In some places, re-enactments of battles and scenes from Shivaji’s life are performed.
  • Tributes and Prayers: The day begins with tributes to Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj at his various memorials and forts. In Raigad, his coronation site, special ceremonies are held where people offer flowers, incense and prayers to honor his legacy. Schools and colleges organize events where students learn about his life and his contributions to India’s history.

Jagarans (night vigils) are also held in many places, with people singing devotional songs in praise of  ChatrapatiShivaji Maharaj.
  • Political and Social Celebrations: The state government, as well as political and social organizations, organize speeches, seminars and discussions on  Chatrapati Shivaji’s life, focusing on his values and ideals. Public addresses are made by leaders and various community events are organized to encourage a sense of pride in Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s contributions to the nation.
  • Educational Events: Schools and educational institutions celebrate Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Jayanti by conducting essay writing, debates and quiz competitions on his life and legacy. Children are taught about his bravery and principles, ensuring that the younger generation understands the significance of this legendary figure in India’s history.
